SUMMARY:THIRD ANNUAL - TARPON SPRINGS - WITCHES/WARLOCKS PADDLE PARADE
DESCRIPTION:THIRD ANNUAL – TARPON SPRINGS – WITCHES/WARLOCKS PADDLE PARADE \nSat.\, 10/28/23\, Tarpon Splash Park to Craig Park \nCOME PADDLE WITH US OR WATCH!  Start launching @ 11 am and mingle.  Parade starts at Noon. \nGet your pointy hats ready to haunt the Anclote River and the villagers of Tarpon Springs!  Bring your best cackle laugh and dance moves to go along with the provided Halloween tunes.  Be sure to wear your witchy garb for a festive Fall Paddle Parade. \nKayaks and paddleboards (SUPs/iSUPs) are welcome.  This is not a guide event.  You are responsible for your own safety. \nFYI – There are posted signs for “No dogs are allowed at the Park”. \nThis is not a race\, rather a slow parade to take time to engage with onlookers and draw them in with your witchiness!  We’ll do a casual two-mile paddle (four miles round trip) along the historic Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks’ village of nostalgic boats\, restaurants and shops.  We’ll meander our way to the bayou of beautiful Victorian homes of Craig Park (restrooms available) for our lunch break.  At Craig Park we will be entertained with an on land performance by the Island Witches Dance Troupe.  Everyone is welcome to hang out at Craig Park bayou or paddle back to their launch point when they are ready. \nHere is a link to a drone video of last year’s event:https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5pp5AWxOR4A&fbclid=IwAR3aSH-uOs9Ba1N8IqOorKjOcjJmyDKad1jtteOQzebo5U5P8jJY49an6xo \nTo see all event details and sign up for free fun\, please join the Facebook group\, “Witches/Warlocks Paddle Parade”.

SUMMARY:Golden Harvest: The Music and Traditions of the Greek Spongers of Tarpon Springs
DESCRIPTION:Since Tarpon Springs’ Greek sponge diving industry was founded in the early 1900s\, traditional Greek music\, dance\, and poetry have been at the center of the community. Much of this music is directly connected to the distinct culture that grew up around sponging on Greek islands over the centuries and ranges from joyful dances to laments mourning divers lost under the waves. This presentation explores the rich cultural history of Tarpon Springs through its music\, including live performances on violin\, lute\, goatskin bagpipes\, and songs in Greek and English. \nRegister Online: tarponlibrary.org/greek-music \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Panayotis (Paddy) League is a musicologist\, author\, performer\, and composer specializing in the traditional music\, dance\, and oral poetry of the Greek Islands\, Brazil\, Ireland\, and the electric guitar music of the American South. Dr. League serves as Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology and the Director of the Center for the Music of Americas at Florida State University. He publishes and performs widely\, and was named a Master Artist by the Florida Folklife Program in 2019.\nThis event is part of Florida Humanities’ redesigned Florida Talks program. It is sponsored in part by the State of Florida\, Department of State\, Division of Arts and Culture\, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. \nFunding for this program was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views\, findings\, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this website do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities.
