DESCRIPTION:Since Tarpon Springs’ Greek sponge diving industry was founded in the early 1900s\, traditional Greek music\, dance\, and poetry have been at the center of the community. Much of this music is directly connected to the distinct culture that grew up around sponging on Greek islands over the centuries and ranges from joyful dances to laments mourning divers lost under the waves. This presentation explores the rich cultural history of Tarpon Springs through its music\, including live performances on violin\, lute\, goatskin bagpipes\, and songs in Greek and English. \nRegister Online: tarponlibrary.org/greek-music \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Panayotis (Paddy) League is a musicologist\, author\, performer\, and composer specializing in the traditional music\, dance\, and oral poetry of the Greek Islands\, Brazil\, Ireland\, and the electric guitar music of the American South. Dr. League serves as Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology and the Director of the Center for the Music of Americas at Florida State University. He publishes and performs widely\, and was named a Master Artist by the Florida Folklife Program in 2019.\nThis event is part of Florida Humanities’ redesigned Florida Talks program. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mary Safford (actor Dee O’Brien) and Dr. Fidelia Whitcomb (actor Elizabeth Coachman\, MD)  recount their over ten-year association that eventually led to their practicing medicine in Tarpon Springs in the 1880s. Dr. Whitcomb was a student of Dr. Safford at the Boston University School of Medicine. Both women were homeopathic physicians and ardent proponents of various reform movements. In the mid-1880s\, they ran the Tarpon Springs Hotel as a health spa based on homeopathic principles\, and both opened medical practices in town.  The two women were likely Florida’s first trained woman physicians.

SUMMARY:Knowledge & Nibbles – George Innes Jr.\, An Artist’s Legacy in Tarpon Springs
DESCRIPTION:In 2019 George Inness\, Jr. was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. For 24 seasons\, from 1902 to 1926\, Inness\, Jr. wintered in Tarpon Springs where he built a large home\, studio\, and artists’ colony\, and contributed to the cultural promotion and development of the city. For his beloved Church\, presently the Unitarian Universalist Church Tarpon Springs (UUCTS)\, he bequeathed a pantheon of paintings\, including eight large works specifically painted for the sanctuary. This two-part program will include a special tour of the 12 paintings on view in the UUCTS Church following the lecture.
